BowlBuddy Terms of Use & Privacy Policy
Terms of Use
1. About these terms
BowlBuddy (the “app”) is published by Franck Clement, an individual developer based in Canada (“we”, “us”, “our”). These Terms of Use apply to the BowlBuddy app for iPhone, iPad and Apple Watch, its widgets and Live Activity, and BowlBuddy Pro.
Your use of the app is also governed by Apple’s Licensed Application End User License Agreement (the “Apple EULA”). These terms add to the Apple EULA. If they conflict on the licence to use the app, the Apple EULA prevails.
By downloading or using the app you agree to these terms. If you do not agree, do not use the app.
Our contact email is support@bowlbuddy.download. The trader contact details required by the EU Digital Services Act are shown on the app’s App Store page.
2. What the app does
- Scoring: record games ball by ball with the pins left standing, or enter only the final score, in practice sessions, leagues and tournaments.
- Stats: averages, strikes, spares, opens, splits and spare conversion, worked out from the games you record.
- Leagues, centers and arsenal: keep your leagues, the bowling centers you play at and the balls you throw.
- Sync and export: your records sync between your devices through your own iCloud account, and you can export them to a CSV file and import them back. Recording, syncing, editing, deleting and exporting your data are free.
- BowlBuddy Pro: adds features such as league handicap and no-tap, pocket hits, lane details, more bowlers, an unlimited arsenal, the PDF season report, widgets and the Live Activity, Siri and Shortcuts, the Apple Watch app and accent colors.
We may add, change or remove features over time.
3. Who can use the app
No account is needed to use BowlBuddy. If you are under the age of majority where you live, a parent or legal guardian must review and agree to these terms and should approve any purchase.
4. BowlBuddy Pro purchases
Plans
BowlBuddy Pro can be bought as an auto-renewing monthly subscription or as a one-time lifetime purchase. Both unlock the same features. Current prices are shown in the app and on the App Store in your local currency before you buy.
Payment
All purchases are processed by Apple and charged to your Apple Account when you confirm the purchase. Apple is the seller of record, and Apple’s Media Services Terms and Conditions also apply. Taxes are applied as Apple determines for your country or region.
Automatic renewal and cancellation
- The subscription renews automatically at the end of each month, at the price then in effect, unless you turn off auto-renewal at least 24 hours before the end of the current period.
- Your Apple Account is charged for renewal within the 24 hours before the current period ends.
- You can manage or cancel your subscription at any time in the app’s Settings, or in the Settings app: tap your name, then Subscriptions. Cancelling stops the next renewal, and you keep Pro until the end of the period you have already paid for.
- Deleting the app does not cancel a subscription.
- If Apple changes a subscription price, Apple notifies you in advance and, where required, asks for your consent before charging the new price.
Free trials and offers
We may offer a free trial or an introductory price to eligible customers. Apple decides eligibility, and the terms of any offer are shown before you confirm. Unless you cancel at least 24 hours before a trial ends, the subscription starts and you are charged automatically.
Lifetime purchase
The lifetime purchase is a one-time payment, not a subscription, and is never renewed or charged again. It unlocks BowlBuddy Pro on devices signed in to the same Apple Account, for as long as the app remains available and supported. It does not guarantee that any particular feature, or the app itself, will be offered forever (see section 8).
Restoring and Family Sharing
Pro works on your iPhone, iPad and Apple Watch with the same Apple Account. You can restore purchases on another device with Restore Purchases in the app’s Settings. If you use Family Sharing with purchase sharing turned on, members of your family group can use BowlBuddy Pro too.
When Pro ends
If your subscription ends, you keep everything you recorded, including data entered with Pro features, and you can still view, edit, delete and export it. Pro features lock until Pro is active again: for example, the Apple Watch app and widgets show a locked screen, and you cannot add more bowlers or balls beyond the free limits.
Refunds
Because Apple processes all payments, we cannot issue refunds ourselves. You can request a refund from Apple at reportaproblem.apple.com. Refunds follow Apple’s policies and any rights you have under the law where you live, including any legal right of withdrawal.
5. Your data
The scores and other records you enter are yours. They are stored on your devices and, if iCloud is on, in your private iCloud database, which we cannot access (see the Privacy Policy below). Because we never hold a copy, we cannot recover data you delete or lose. We recommend exporting a CSV file from time to time, especially before you sign out of iCloud or change Apple Account.
Sync depends on iCloud, your network connection and your available iCloud storage, which are provided by Apple and outside our control.
6. Acceptable use
You agree not to:
- use the app in a way that breaks any law or the rights of others;
- copy, modify, decompile or reverse engineer the app, except where the law allows it despite this restriction;
- bypass or tamper with the purchase system to access Pro features without paying.
7. Accuracy of scores and stats
BowlBuddy computes scores, averages, handicaps and other stats from what you enter, following standard ten-pin scoring rules. It is a personal tracking tool, not an official scoring system. It is not affiliated with or endorsed by the USBC, any other bowling organization, or any bowling center or league. Your league secretary’s or center’s records prevail over the app for anything official, such as averages, handicaps and standings.
We do our best to keep BowlBuddy accurate, but we do not guarantee that every number is free of errors.
8. Changes to the app and availability
We may update, change, suspend or stop offering the app or any feature at any time, for example if we can no longer maintain it. We will try to give reasonable notice of major changes through the app or its release notes. If the app is ever discontinued, we will try to keep CSV export working so you can take your data with you. This does not reduce any refund or other remedy you are entitled to by law.
9. Intellectual property
The app, including its code, design and original text, belongs to Franck Clement and is licensed to you, not sold, under the Apple EULA. Bowling center names and addresses found through search come from Apple Maps. Other names and marks belong to their respective owners. These terms do not grant you any rights beyond using the app for your personal, non-commercial use.
10. Disclaimer
To the extent permitted by law, the app is provided “as is” and “as available”, without warranties of any kind, whether express or implied, including warranties of merchantability, fitness for a particular purpose, accuracy and non-infringement.
11. Limitation of liability
To the extent permitted by law, we are not liable for any indirect, incidental, special or consequential loss or damage, or for loss of data, scores, opportunities or enjoyment.
To the extent permitted by law, our total liability to you for all claims related to the app is limited to the amount you paid for BowlBuddy Pro in the 12 months before the event giving rise to the claim.
Nothing in these terms excludes or limits liability that cannot be excluded or limited by law, such as liability for fraud, gross negligence, intentional misconduct, or death or personal injury caused by negligence.
12. Your consumer rights
Nothing in these terms removes or limits the rights you have as a consumer under the laws of the country, province or state where you live, including the Quebec Consumer Protection Act and consumer laws in the European Union, United Kingdom and Australia. If any part of these terms conflicts with those rights, those rights prevail.
13. Governing law and disputes
These terms are governed by the laws of the Canadian province where the publisher resides and the federal laws of Canada that apply there, without regard to conflict-of-law rules. If you are a consumer, you also keep the protection of the mandatory laws of the place where you live, and you may bring a claim in the courts of that place where the law allows it.
If you have a problem, please email us first. Most issues can be solved quickly that way.
14. Changes to these terms
We may update these terms, for example when features change. We will update the date at the top of this page and, for significant changes, tell you in the app or in the release notes before they take effect. Changes never apply retroactively to purchases you have already made. If you keep using the app after changes take effect, you accept the updated terms. If you do not accept them, stop using the app and cancel any subscription.
If any part of these terms is found unenforceable, the rest remains in effect.
Privacy Policy
In short
- No account, no ads, no analytics, no tracking, and no third-party SDKs. We have no server.
- Your scores and everything else you enter stay on your devices and in your own private iCloud database. We cannot see or access them.
- When you search for a bowling center, the text you type is sent to Apple Maps. The app never asks for your location.
- Purchases are handled by Apple. We never see your name, email address or payment details.
- This website uses no cookies and no analytics.
- The only personal information we ever receive is what you choose to send us by email.
1. Who is responsible
Franck Clement, publisher of BowlBuddy, is responsible for this policy and is the person in charge of the protection of personal information. For any privacy question or request, email support@bowlbuddy.download.
This policy follows Canada’s Personal Information Protection and Electronic Documents Act (PIPEDA) and Quebec’s Act respecting the protection of personal information in the private sector. For users in the European Economic Area, the United Kingdom and Switzerland, it also covers the information the GDPR requires.
2. What the app stores
The app stores what you enter so it can work:
- bowler profiles: a name, handedness and an optional starting average;
- sessions, games, frames and each ball, with optional notes, lane, oil pattern, lineup board and target arrow;
- leagues (name, night, season dates, handicap settings) and bowling centers (name and city);
- your arsenal: ball names, brands, weights, colors and notes;
- your preferences, such as the accent color, and whether BowlBuddy Pro was active at the last check, so widgets and the Watch work before the App Store responds;
- simple counters used to decide when to show Apple’s rating prompt.
None of this is sent to us or to anyone else, except as described in sections 3 to 6.
3. iCloud sync
If you are signed in to iCloud, the app keeps your records in the private database of your own iCloud account using Apple’s CloudKit, so they sync between your iPhone, iPad and Apple Watch. This database belongs to your Apple Account: as the developer, we have no access to its contents. Apple stores and protects it under Apple’s Privacy Policy, and it counts toward your iCloud storage.
To keep devices in sync, Apple’s push notification service sends silent notifications to the app when your data changes. These come from Apple’s servers, not ours, and are not shown to you.
If iCloud is off or unavailable, your records stay only on the device. Depending on your settings, iOS may also include the app’s data in your device backups (iCloud Backup or a computer backup).
4. Bowling center search
When you search for a bowling center, the app sends the text you type to Apple Maps to find matching places. The app does not request or use your location. Apple handles these searches under its own privacy policy and does not link them to your Apple Account. If you add a center by hand, nothing is sent.
5. Apple Watch, widgets and Siri
- Apple Watch: the iPhone and the Watch exchange your game, each ball you score and your Pro status directly with each other, using Apple’s WatchConnectivity.
- Widgets and Live Activity: the app saves a small summary (such as your average and the current game) in storage shared with its widgets on the same device, so they can display it.
- Siri and Shortcuts: if you use them, Apple processes your voice requests under Apple’s privacy policy. The app only receives the result, such as a league and a score.
6. Exports and sharing
CSV exports, score card images and PDF season reports are created on your device. They go only where you choose to send or save them, through the iOS share sheet. Shared score cards carry a “Scored with BowlBuddy” mark. Files you import are read on your device.
7. Notifications
If you try to unlock Pro from the Apple Watch while the iPhone app is in the background, the app may show a local notification on your iPhone to finish the purchase there. It is created on your device. You can turn notifications off at any time in the Settings app.
8. Purchases
Purchases and subscriptions are processed entirely by Apple. We do not receive your name, email address, Apple Account details or payment information. The app checks the status of your BowlBuddy Pro purchase on your device using Apple’s StoreKit, which returns a transaction record signed by Apple. This check stays on your device.
Apple provides developers with sales and subscription reports in App Store Connect. These reports do not identify you personally.
9. Information Apple may share with us
If you have chosen in your device settings to share analytics with app developers, Apple may give us crash reports and aggregated usage statistics (such as number of installs and sessions) through App Store Connect. Apple controls this data under its own privacy policy, and it does not identify you to us. You can turn this off in Settings > Privacy & Security > Analytics & Improvements.
The rating prompt is Apple’s system prompt. Apple handles ratings and reviews, and we only see reviews that are published on the App Store.
10. When you email us
If you email us, we receive your email address, your name if it is part of your email, the content of your message, and anything you choose to include (such as your device model, iOS version or an exported file).
- Purpose: to reply and to solve your request. We do not use it for marketing.
- Legal basis (GDPR): our legitimate interest in answering you, or the steps needed to handle your request.
- Storage: our email is forwarded by Cloudflare and hosted by Google (Gmail). Emails may be stored on servers outside your country, including in the United States, where they may be accessible to authorities under local law.
- Retention: we keep emails only as long as needed to handle your request and any follow-up, and delete them sooner if you ask.
11. This website
This website (bowlbuddy.download) is hosted by GitHub Pages, and its domain name is managed by Cloudflare. Like any web server, GitHub receives your IP address and browser details when you load a page, and may keep them in its logs for security purposes. The site sets no cookies, uses no analytics and loads no third-party scripts. If you choose light or dark mode with the header button, that choice is saved in your own browser only.
- Providers: GitHub, Inc. and Cloudflare, Inc., both based in the United States, under their own privacy policies.
12. What we never do
We do not sell, rent or trade personal information. We do not use advertising, advertising identifiers, analytics or tracking SDKs, and we do not track you across other apps or websites. The app does not access your location, contacts, photos, camera, microphone or health data.
We may disclose the information described in section 10 only if the law requires it, or where necessary to protect our legal rights.
13. Your choices and rights
Because your data stays on your devices and in your iCloud, you control it directly:
- edit or delete any game, session, bowler, league, center or ball in the app;
- export everything to a CSV file at any time from the app’s Settings;
- stop syncing by turning off iCloud for BowlBuddy in the Settings app: tap your name, then iCloud;
- delete the app’s iCloud data in the Settings app: tap your name, then iCloud, then Manage Storage (or Storage), then BowlBuddy;
- delete the app to erase what it stored on that device.
Depending on where you live, you may have the right to access, correct or delete personal information we hold about you, to withdraw consent, to object to or restrict processing, and to receive your data in a portable format. Since the only personal information we may hold is email correspondence, email us to make a request. We will answer within 30 days.
If you are not satisfied with our answer, you can complain to the Office of the Privacy Commissioner of Canada, to Quebec’s Commission d’accès à l’information if you live in Quebec, or to the data protection authority where you live in the EU, the UK or Switzerland.
14. Children
BowlBuddy does not collect personal information from anyone, including children. Records a parent keeps for a young bowler stay in the parent’s own devices and iCloud. If you believe a child has sent us personal information by email, contact us and we will delete it.
15. Security
Data stored by the app is protected by the iOS and watchOS app sandbox and data protection. iCloud data is encrypted by Apple in transit and on its servers. Network requests use encrypted connections. No method of storage or transmission is completely secure, but because we do not collect your data, very little of it is exposed in the first place.
16. Changes to this policy
We will update this policy if the app’s handling of data changes, for example if a new feature needs new data. We will change the date at the top of this page and, for significant changes, tell you in the app or in the release notes before they take effect.
